Which rope do I use?

I use 2 different types of rope for different occasions. Here is the is the first rope that I bought many years ago, I remember doing hours of research on this and although it is NOT considered the best rope now ( Look below for the best rope that is used in Shibari) It’s still good rope for beginners:

rope for bdsm play

Where did I get my info: For western-style rope bondage, the top 2 guys for rope bondage were: the knotty boys, They are retired now but they used this stuff:

“Nylon solid braid rope 7/16″ (11mm) or 3/8″ (9mm) for harnesses and wraps, with 1/8″ (3mm) nylon for the finer, decorative stuff.”

Nowadays people tend to use a very different type of rope as the trend is to do (japanese) shibari style rope bondage. It’s still good to mix it up though and since this feels very different on the skin I’ll still give you more info on it: How much do you need: 2 pairs of short ropes (10 foot), a pair of medium ropes (30 foot) and at least one longer length: 50 to 60 foot.

Rope burn: This type has a silky smooth texture and is by far the easiest rope to cause rope burn. The alternative is jute rope which isn’t likely to cause rope burn and can leave delicious little rope bite-mark trophies on your skin.

Alternatives: I would definitely recommend japanese shibari rope. It can take days to prepare if you do it yourself and can cause splinters if you don’t have it prepared, or you can get a washing line and cut off circulation to vital organs. Remember you’e working with a human being so do your research, watch lots of vids and attend workshops before engaging in rope play.

After attending a few rope workshops in my home-city of London and meeting with experts with many lifetimes of intimate experience of rope, I came across the Japanese arts of kinbaku and shibari (meanings of those in a different place & time – for now : think: artistic poses, aesthetically driven and sexually driven scenes…basically japanese bondage, sessions of rope play) so I was lucky enough not to have to judge what good rope to get, I could simply draw on the experiences of manay experts that perform with rope every day on stage. The answer is good standard twist rope: jute (asanawa), this Japanese style rope is a high performance rope with a high strand count for better longevity, twisted from reinforced 5mm rope, from high quality fibre:

jute rope

Rope of choice for tying up your partner.

So those are the 2 types of rope that I use, I use the jute 90% of the time, mixing in the nylon for variety once in a while 😉
